When people complained about public transit they mean local public transit not high speed rail. Planes could do what the highspeed rail does way fast, cheaper, and better. You can't compared a muti state highway system to a train that no one is going to use. Highways are faster, better, more flexible anyone could use it anytime. Meanwhile tracks are only being used a few seconds a day only when the train is passing by. Those rails cannot be used for freight because those trains are different and its almost one train on the track at a time. Meanwhiles millions of people could use a highway daily, nightly and at any hours but trains could only be used 30 seconds a day as the train is passing by it. Long distance fast train is the dumbest thing ever. It's cool and I love train but practically its stupid. The only thing that are good for train are for freight and anyone within 60 miles for commuter trains. Long distance trains are dumb.

My only issue with the "let's not build roads" thing is the city does actually need to be reshaped to match. Australia is currently incredibly sparse and the PT works a bit, but for it to get much better the cities need to be re imagined with pt at the heart and made more dense. So yes, build more trains, but if they city is sparse, people will drive even if the roads suck because the trains will still be hard to get to.

Perhaps I'm a little uneducated in the project, but I'm from New York and everyone I asked about congestion pricing only had bad things to say about it, I've even received emails from various state politicians asking for my support to make sure it doesn't go into effect. Like it's not the car owning, insurance paying publics fault that the MTA is managed so piss poorly, why should we have to pay? Isn't it enough we have to pay for various tolls (some of which we promised temporary which then became permanent, like the Verrezzano) just to get into Manhattan? And then pay again just to park, whether that be on the street or in a parking garage? You mention Tony Baloney in his Mercedes complaining about it, but in case you haven't noticed not everyone stuck in the gridlock traffic of NYC is driving some fancy Mercedes, having a smoke in the back while their chauffer gets them where they need to go. The grand majority of them are just average every day people who make average every day salaries, and not everybody's so content to just take the train or the bus to work or wherever they need to go, especially not with all the increased violence going around our city. My parents have lived in NYC almost all their lives and even THEY refuse to take the train anywhere because of said violence. If NYC want us to support a bill that helps the MTA then they should stop managing it like garbage. Why should I, a taxpaying citizen who keeps up with his car, be content to pay what I consider a bogus charge to help fund garbage?

Look, I dont mind transit. But my mom is a disabled elderly teacher. Congestion pricing would fuck her royally. Walkability is nice but honestly it doesnt work for everyone. Not every disabled person is on a wheelchair or mobility scooter. I see the appeal to it, and I actually want it to happen, but I do think it was a bit rushed as to how much people are being charged. Its nice to think that people who drive in NYC are people in the hamptons in their mercedes, but truthfully a lot of people that have cars in said poorer neighborhoods are barely able to afford the car in the first place, and to glance over them is a genuine disservice. Us who grew up in the city, the city is a trap, with an unrelenting curse of bullshit and idiocracy. A car is the freedom to finally leave, or at least grant respite from the insanity of the city. So, genuine question, whats to be said of the owners of 1998 honda civics? What they get half off after getting charged 150 a month? what a great deal!

Portland OR to Vancouver BC would be awesome. I live in Olympia and despite being 60 miles from Seattle I rarely visit due to traffic. There is a public transit bus from Olympia to Lakewood where you can connect to Sounder trains, or bus routes up to Tacoma to connect to Seattle. Generally Driving on I-5 can be about an hour in good traffic but suddenly it can become a multi hour ordeal. Seattle Parking is expensive so if I wanted to take a nice little day trip, I'd prefer taking public transit.

I agree that those parking garages are ugly. However, those garages are better alternatives to super sized parking lots. They save up space. Blame the government for creating soviet-like zoning laws that reates car-centered cities. In a car centered country, i'm not giving up my car.

I'm from Canada and I recently went to NYC. We parked in Newark and took the PATH Train to Manhattan, and then NJT back. We NEVER drive in Manhattan because it's not worth it. You wont get anywhere fast, you'll be hit by Taxis, you're a danger to the millions of pedestrians, and you won't be able to find parking. We always take the subway or walk

In Düsseldorf, Germany, they moved some big roads into tunnel near the Rhine, allowing for extensive pedestrian areas and low capacity roads for the people who happen to live there. Yes, the tunnel is almost always backed up in rush hours, but so was the road above before it. So, I personally think that moving roads underground is a great way to give cities their walkability back.
